The Different Types of Web Hosting and Which One to Choose

Web hosting is a service that ensures your website files are accessible on the internet. Your 'web host' rents space on a server and makes the data available to visitors through a network of computers. It also provides the hardware and software that make your site functional and secure.

As you would expect, different websites require a variety of server resources. For example, a high-traffic site will need hosting with plenty of power, while a low-traffic site can get by with less powerful servers. Your web host may also provide different types of hosting plans for its customers.

If you are a new website owner, shared hosting is probably your best option. It is the most affordable and easiest way to get your site online. Shared hosting plans allow a number of websites to share the same server. This means your site will live on the same physical server as other websites, but you do not have access to their files or private information. As a result, the overall cost of shared hosting is split among many users and it is the most popular type of web hosting.

For more advanced sites that need more flexibility or performance, virtual private servers (VPS) are a good option. These servers run on one physical server, but the web host creates multiple virtually-partitioned containers. Each VPS acts as a complete system that is devoted to the site it hosts, and provides more control and performance than shared plans. VPS web hosting is a great choice for medium-sized websites, eCommerce shops, and large blogs that attract a lot of traffic.

Dedicated servers are reserved for those with the most sophisticated website requirements. By renting an entire server, you will have a system that is exclusively for your website. This is more expensive than other hosting options, but it gives you greater control and security.

Some web developers choose to resell the hosting services they purchase from their web host. Reseller hosting lets them provide a complete package of hosting and other services to their clients and earn recurring revenue as a result. Many web hosts offer reseller packages, so you can do some shopping around to see what plan and web host is best for your business needs.
